چکیده

The frequency of abdominal peristaltic locomotor waves in tent caterpillars during vertical ascension is controlled by the temperature according to the equation of Arrhenius. The constant micro (temperature characteristic) has the value 12,200 calories, agreeing quantitatively with the value obtained for a number of other (non-respiratory) rhythmic neuromuscular movements among arthropods.

Impact of Tent Caterpillar Defoliation on the Reproductive Success of Black-capped Chickadees’

Outbreaks of folivorous Lepidoptera caterpillars are common in temperate forests (Ives and Wong 1988, Butterworth 1990). The high fat content, low chitin content, and large size of these larvae make them an important component of the diet of many temperate birds (Betts 1955, Robinson and Holmes 1982, Holmes and Schultz 1988, Sample et. al. 1993). Outbreaks of most species should increase availa...

How well do specialist feeders regulate nutrient intake? Evidence from a gregarious tree-feeding caterpillar.

Nutritional regulation is a powerful mechanism used by generalist feeders to obtain the balance of nutrients they require from nutritionally diverse, perhaps unbalanced, foods. We examined nutritional regulation in a species with a narrow individual diet breadth: the forest tent caterpillar, Malacosoma disstria. Fourth instar caterpillars were provided with artificial foods consisting of differ...

Each tent was used for three experimental series and contained either 10 plants of the bell pepper (Capsicum annuum) with 6–15 leaves per plant, or 10 plants of the soybean (Glycine max) with 11– 30 leaves per plant (see Figure S1 in the Supplemental data available on-line with this i...

Plasticity of collective behavior in a nomadic early spring folivore

Collective behavior in the forest tent caterpillar (Malacosoma disstria) meets the thermal constraints of being an early spring folivore, but introduces other constraints in food choice. These are minimized by state-dependent, inter-individual, and ontogenetic variations in responses to social cues. Forest tent caterpillars use pheromone trails and tactile communication among colony members to ...

PHYSIOLOGICAL AND CHEMICAL ECOLOGY Effects of Phenolic Glycosides and Protein on Gypsy Moth (Lepidoptera: Lymantriidae) and Forest Tent Caterpillar (Lepidoptera: Lasiocampidae) Performance and Detoxication Activities

Levels of phenolic glycosides and protein inßuence the quality of aspen leaves to herbivorous insects, and vary in relation to genetic and environmental factors. This research was conducted to assess the independent and interactive effects of phenolic glycosides and protein on the performance and detoxication enzyme activities of gypsy moths, Lymantria dispar (L.), and forest tent caterpillars,...
